Last week I was able to acquire the less common version of the Minolta MD Zoom 35-70mm 1:3.5, the plain MD version without the macro setting and a closest focussing distance of 1m, which explains why this version wasn’t very popular: 1m is inconveniently long, especially for use at a 35mm focal length.
Another acquistion was the early version of the Minolta AF Zoom 35-105mm 1:3.5-4.5, a lens that I bought primarily because some people think highly of its optical performance.
It generated enough curiosity to get one and test it, and I must say it isn’t half bad on the Sony A7. Only the extreme corners never really sharpen up on stopping down. I also made a lens correction profile for geometric distortion and chromatic aberration for use in Adobe Lightroom/Camera Raw and this didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. It appears that the geometric distortion changes quickly from barrel to pincushion between 35mm and 40mm. Combined with the fact that the focal length is reported to the EXIF data in multiples of 5mm, this results in residual pincushion distortion in the 40-45mm range because the correction isn’t always appropriate for the actual focal length that the lens was set to. Not really suitable for architecture.

Naast mijn MD 35-70/3.5, waar is zeer tevreden over ben zoek ik een goede zoomlens met iets meer bereik, in het bijzonder ben ik benieuwd naar jouw ervaringen met de eerste MD 35-105/3.5-4.5 (16/13).
Afgelopen weken heb ik wat foto’s gemaakt met twee MD zoomlenzen op m’n A7, de tweede 35-105/3.5-4.5 (14/12) en de 50-135/3.5. Gezien de verhalen op internet waren de verwachtingen redelijk hoog gespannen voor de 35-105 maar, helaas valt hij tegen, de hoeken zijn inderdaad niet goed (ik denk dat ik vooral reviews op APS-C gezien heb) en de onscherpte vind ik erg onrustig, storend bij portretten, ook dit zie ik in reviews niet in die mate terug.
Dat alles integenstelling tot de 50-135/3.5 waar ik wisselende verhalen over vind maar, in de praktijk is het voor mij een heel bruikbare lens, misschien niet de aller scherpste maar, vanaf f8 zijn de hoeken goed genoeg en vanaf 70 a 100mm is de onscherpte prima, ook lijkt hij wat minder sterk te vertekenen. Het enige nadeel van de 50-135 is dat hij niet bij 35mm begint, is de eerste 35-105 een goed alternatief? Of misschien de 35-135?

Toevallig heb ik lang geleden de eerste versie van de MD 3.5-4.5/35-105 vluchtig getest op de Sony A7 en ik ben er niet enthousiast over. Toen blijkbaar ook al niet, want ik heb in totaal maar 8 testfoto’s gemaakt bij f/5.6. De hoeken ogen inderdaad niet best, een niet zo fraaie onscherpte, en dat op 24 MP; op de Sony A7R4 met zijn 61 MP zal de lens ronduit teleurstellen, verwacht ik. De MD Zoom 3.5-4.5/35-135 heb ik alleen getest op de NEX-6, nooit op full-frame.

Frank asks about my experience with the first version of the MD Zoom 3.5-4.5/35-105 and I’m afraid I’m not enthousiastic about this lens. Corner sharpness is not great and a bit ugly at that, and that’s on the Sony A7’s 24 MP. The lens won’t certainly do great on a 60 MP Sony A7R4. You can judge for yourself with this limited set of test shots.
